Contemporary Dutch artist Levi van Veluw introduces his latest piece, entitled Family. The most recent installment of the artist’s “Origin of the Beginning” series – which consists of various installations, photographs and videos that thematically draw on van Veluw’s own childhood – Family is a life-size installation measuring 4m x 2.5m x 2.5m that depicts van Veluw alongside his mother, father, brother and sister. Covered in 20,000 dark brown wooden blocks and constructed without digital manipulation, the piece sees the family members closely seated around a table – seemingly the embodiment of a perfectly happy family. However, the dark colors, dim lighting, claustrophobic space, and uncomfortable silence paints a different picture entirely as van Veluw emphasizes the underlying tensions and emotions of the household.
